Repairing Chipped Stone Counters
A few chips in your custom quartz kitchen counter doesn’t mean it’s time for a renovation. However, your kitchen doesn’t look as nice with damage, even if it’s small.
But don’t worry! Repairing chipped stone countertops is surprisingly simple and a task you can definitely DIY. With this skill in your arsenal, you never have to put up with chipped counters again!
Materials for Repairing a Stone Counter
The easiest way to gather the materials for the stone repair is to buy a repair kit specific to your type of stone (custom quartz, granite, marble, etc). However, it isn’t necessary to buy a kit. The basic process requires materials that you may already have on hand:
Now let’s look at what you need to do.
Step 1: Clean the Area
The epoxy won’t stick well if there is dust or debris in the way. Clean the chip and the surrounding area thoroughly with an ammonia-based or other non-abrasive cleaner.
Be sure to choose an appropriate cleaner for your stone. Remember that acidic cleaners like vinegar can damage or discolor some types of stone.
Wipe with a soft cloth and allow to dry completely.
Step 2: Mask Off the Area
This step is optional but can reduce the amount of sanding you have to do later. Place masking tape or duct tape along the edges of the chip. This will prevent your filler from spilling over onto the counter around the chip.
Step 3: Apply the Filler
Typically, you’ll use some sort of gel epoxy or resin to fix chipped stone counters. If you buy a stone repair kit, you’ll get the type best suited for the stone you have.
If you buy the filler separately, just make sure it will work for your purposes. Gently fill the area and smooth it off as much as possible.
Hardening times may vary somewhat depending on the type of filler you’re using. Read and follow the instructions that come with it.
Step 4: Apply a Hardener Spray
Many stone repair kits will come with a hardener spray that you spritz over the top of the epoxy. It’s not strictly necessary but can help strengthen epoxy and make it last longer. It if came with your kit, you should use it.
Apply the spray, making sure to wipe away the excess from the surrounding area.
Step 5: Smooth It Out
Give the hardener spray a chance to dry, then smooth the area with a razor blade or something similar. Work gently so you don’t scratch the countertop.
Finish it off by buffing the area with sandpaper or steel wool to ensure a smooth finish. When done well, small repairs like this are not even noticeable and your countertop looks like new again!
