Living green is a must – and it doesn’t have to be hard. We have compiled five short steps to help make your kitchen more green.
#1 No harsh chemicals
It’s no secret that harsh chemicals harm the environment. So, try to use as few chemicals around the house as possible. Harsh cleaning chemicals can often break down sealant present on many different countertops.
In the best case scenario, you should convert to 100% natural cleaning products. There are many brands that have created lines of cleaning products with no harmful ingredients. Or, you can always make use of things you already have lying around the house like lemons or vinegar. Keep in mind that you should never use chemical cleaners if you have natural stone countertops.
#2 Update Appliances
If your appliances are a few years old, it may be time to switch them out. Newer appliances usually don’t require as much energy as appliances that were sold 10 years ago. Not only will you save on your monthly electric bill, but you can be rest assured your kitchen has a smaller carbon blueprint.
#3 Avoid excess packaging
In general, plastic is harmful to the environment. Try to avoid purchasing products that have a lot of excess packaging. Remember to bring your own bags to the grocery store or ask for paper instead of plastic ones in order to avoid contributing to the vast amount of garbage in the United States.
#4 Remember to Recycle!
Look up the different recycling rules and pickup timetable in your area and start separating your trash. If you have a garden, consider saving food rests to compose in the soil.
#5 Natural stone
Natural stone and tile are two of the most durable and most environmentally friendly materials on the market today. There are virtually no chemicals or fumes involved creating natural stone countertops since the main material occurs naturally in nature and only needs to be cut to fit the dimensions of your space.
