Light vs. Dark Countertops

When it's time to update your countertops, it can be hard to know which color scheme will look best in your kitchen, bathroom, or any other room in your home. One of the biggest debates when choosing countertops is whether to go light or dark.

While there's no right or wrong answer, both light and dark countertops have pros and cons that you'll want to consider. Here's what you need to know when deciding what colors your new kitchen counters should be.

Light countertops

Whether they're being used in a kitchen, bathroom, or as a bar top, light countertops create a clean, crisp look. Whites, creams, light grays, and other subtle colors keep the room from feeling too visually heavy.

Light countertops are great for achieving a more open and airy look. But don't let the light color fool you! Many light-colored countertops have unique patterns, some of which can be quite bold.

The biggest drawback to having light countertops is that they show every speck of dirt, whether it's spilled salt or spilled coffee. Be prepared to wipe down your countertops more often to keep them as clean as possible.

Dark countertops

If you want bold countertops that steal the show each time you enter the room, go dark. Dark countertops draw the eyes and will make a statement in any room in your home.

Choosing a darker color is also beneficial in that they hide everything. You won't notice stains or spills as readily.

While dark countertops are bold and fun, they can also make a space look smaller. Dark colors soak up more light and can make a small room look even less spacious.

Factors to consider when choosing a countertop color

When choosing light vs. dark counters, there are many other factors that you'll want to consider to help drive your decision. Here's what you need to keep in mind when planning a kitchen remodel or a bathroom renovation.

  • Maintenance. While countertops should be wiped down frequently, dirt and debris are more noticeable on lighter countertops. If you're looking for a lower maintenance counter, a darker-colored stone may be ideal.
  • Lifestyle. Think about how you use the kitchen or bathroom. This can help you decide which countertop material is most suitable for your needs.
  • Room size. The size of the room often dictates which countertops will look best in the space. Larger rooms can handle both light and dark counters. However, it's usually ideal for sticking with light countertops for smaller areas.
  • Existing décor. Look around the room that you're looking to remodel. What colors are already being used? Does the room lean towards the light or dark side? You want countertops that enhance the existing ambiance.
