Countertop Finishing Guide

When evaluating stone countertops, it is crucial to keep in mind that the appearance can be completely modified by the finishing process that you select. Most stones can often be finished with either a rough or smooth texture. Some projects may even lend themselves to particular countertop finishes.

A leathered look for a bar countertop is an excellent example of this. Today, we will take a moment to explore all of the different surface finishes. Let’s take a look!

Polished

The most common finish chosen for stone countertops is polished. When it comes to kitchen counter installation or countertops anywhere in your home, polished always looks elegant. The polished finish looks almost mirror-like and glossy.

With a polished finish, the stone is highlighted as a stunning centerpiece. A polished finish allows the textures and colors to be more vibrant. It is also the easiest finish to clean and keep in good condition.

All you need to do is care for it by resealing and polishing the stone.

Honed

Honed is also known as buffed or matte. It creates a very smooth surface with absolutely no reflection or floss. In order to create this finish, the regular finish process tends to end before the stone is given a flat finish by being buffed.

This finish is excellent for countertops. Though, it can make the countertops more susceptible to staining.

Leathered

The leathered finish is also often known as the brushed finish. It is a much newer finishing style. Though, it is very quickly becoming one of the most popular finishes on the market.

When it comes to counter remodeling, the leathered look always seems to catch attention. It is created when you take a honed surface and run diamond-tipped brushes over it. This adds texture and beautiful yet subtle dimples.

This finish looks extremely sophisticated.

Flamed

While granite is the only natural stone capable of having a flamed finish due to the high heat on the surface of the stone, it is certainly eye-catching. Flamed countertops are extremely rare, though they can be common on outdoor countertops.

The rarity comes in the form of indoor countertops. Granite is heated under extreme temperatures causing the grains in the stone to change color when they burst. The end result is a much rougher surface with a faded and natural appearance. The color is usually muted.

Caressed

The caressed look is created when you take the leathered finish and add some delicate shine. In order to do this, the raised area of the stone is polished, which creates a stunning sheen on the surface. This look is rugged and elegant.

The pores of the stone are sealed to protect it from any moisture getting in. It is perfect for your next home remodel.
